Phantom Leader: Deluxe Edition
Phantom Leader: Deluxe Edition review
I've been a fan of the "Leader" series for a while now, and Phantom Leader: Deluxe Edition certainly doesn't disappoint. It's a fantastic solitaire experience that puts you in the cockpit of a US Air Force or Navy Tactical Fighter squadron during the Vietnam War. The Deluxe Edition really enhances the game with a larger card set, including new aircraft types, pilots, and targets. Plus, the mounted 11"x17" Tactical Display is a welcome upgrade.
The game's focus on the political realities of the war is what really sets it apart. You're not just bombing targets, you're carefully balancing political pressure while trying to achieve your military objectives. It's a fascinating and challenging dilemma, forcing you to make tough decisions with every mission. The system is well-designed and doesn't feel overly complicated. The rulebook is clear and concise, so even if you're new to the "Leader" series, you'll be able to pick it up fairly quickly. The combat system is also straightforward and engaging, with a good balance of skill and luck.
The campaign structure provides a satisfying sense of progression as you gain experience and upgrade your pilots, but it's also challenging enough to keep you on your toes. I really appreciate the variety of targets, aircraft, and missions. Every playthrough feels fresh and engaging.
However, I do have a few minor points that could be improved. The setup can be a bit time-consuming, and there are a lot of small components to keep track of. I recommend setting up the game in a dedicated space where you can leave it out for a few sessions.
Overall, Phantom Leader: Deluxe Edition is a must-have for fans of wargames and solitaire games alike. If you enjoy the strategic depth of the "Leader" series and are interested in the Vietnam War, you'll be sure to find this game a truly immersive and rewarding experience.
