1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties
1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties review
1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties is a fantastic addition to the 18xx series. It's a more complex game than 1846, but that complexity adds a whole new level of strategic depth and competition. I love the company-packed board, the three different train types, and the semi-linear stock market. It keeps you on your toes and there's always something to be doing.
Be warned, this game is not for the faint of heart. It's definitely an 18xx game, meaning you'll need to block out several hours for a game. I've personally had sessions that last around 4 hours. There's lots of calculation, but it's a good kind of busy. Everyone is engaged and there's very little downtime while others take their turn.
The game has a great solo mode, which is a huge plus for me. It's a great way to get your fix when your friends aren't available. The solo rules are a bit more detailed on Boardgame Geeks, but there's a shortened version in the box. If you're looking for a gateway into the 18xx series, I'd recommend starting with 1830 or 1846. This one is definitely best for experienced players.
One minor issue I encountered was the packaging. The box arrived without much padding, and I had a bit of a scare thinking some of the components were damaged. Thankfully, everything was fine. But, it might be something to keep in mind if you're ordering online.
Overall, I highly recommend 1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties. It's a fantastic 18xx game that offers a unique and challenging experience. If you're a fan of the genre, you'll definitely want to check this one out.
